Archer

Introduction

Archer is the ranged physical damage dealing class in Perfect World. The prime focus of archers is on critical strikes and attack speed in order to deal the most damage in the least amount of time. They rely on DPS rather than DPH for their damage. The armour choice of archers is the light armour which gives moderate physical defense and moderate magical defense. All equipments, skills, stats usually revolve around this aspect. Also most of the archer skills and attacks, suffers a 50% damage reduction when the target is within melee/close range. Also being an elf, you have the ability to fly right from level 1.

This guide is more to provide quick insight into the class rather than bore you to death with detailed mechanics which you have no control over.

Stat Builds

Proven Stats Builds

The primary stats for an archer are DEX (or AGI) and STR. Every 20 Dex gives a 1% increase to your critical rate and a boost to your damage along with evasion and accuracy. Archer also need STR in order to meet the stat requirement to wear armours.

Pure Dex

This is perhaps the most widely used stat build since its also the most effective at dealing massive damage. It is characterized by high critical rate, damage, accuracy and evasion.

Stats to increase every level

DEX + 4
STR + 1

Advantages

  1. High Crit %
  2. High Attack and Damage
  3. High Accuracy
  4. High Evasion

Disadvantages

  1. Low HP Pool
  2. Higher Chance to steal aggression from the tanks irrespective of how good they are

Vit Hybird

Some archers feel that their HP is too low to survive/tank and hence reduce the amount of DEX and raise up their VIT (or CON) instead. This would give them additional HP compared at the cost of reducing the crit % and damage. Every VIT point gives the archer 13 hp which is extremely meagre and hence the hp boost isnt so great that it magically turns into a super tank. Therefore this build is usually not suggested but its upto you to decide based on your gaming style.

Stats to increase every level

DEX + 3
STR + 1
VIT + 1

[OR]

Stats to increase every two levels

DEX + 7
STR + 2
VIT + 1

Advantages

  1. Higher HP pool as compared to the pure dex archer.
  2. Slightly higher magical defense as VIT increases that as well
  3. Reduced chance of stealing aggression from tanks.

Disadvantages

  1. Lower Crit %
  2. Lower Attack and Damage
  3. Lower Accuracy
  4. Lower Evasion

Experimental Stats Builds

Given that not everyone thinks the same way, you will find a lot of unique and experimental builds out there that might interest you. A few of them are provided below.

Arcane Archer

Some people have come up with this build in order to increase their survivability against ranged magic mobs and wizards along with a greater mana pool to spam skills. With the arcane build, you will be able to wear both Light Armour (moderate physical defense and moderate magical defense) and Arcane Armour (Low physical defense and moderate magical defense) The stat build goes something as follows:-

Stats to increase every two levels

DEX + 6
MAG + 3 —> This is the minimum stat requirement for wearing arcane armour
STR + 1

Advantages

  1. Can switch to arcane armour for increased magical defense provided a slightly better reduction in magical damage taken.
  2. Higher Mana Pool for spamming skills.

Disadvantages

  1. Lower Crit %
  2. Lower Attack and Damage
  3. Increased physical damage taken unless you switch between arcane and light armours and should you switch…you would need to invest in two armour sets instead of one making it more expensive to maintain.
  4. Lower Accuracy
  5. Lower Evasion

Skill Progression

Skills are usually learnt at the Archer Trainer NPC which can be found in 3 of the major cities (Archosaur, City of Thousand Streams, Dreamweaver Port) and the starting area Plume City. The archer class has the least number of skills to learn and in practice use even lesser when it comes to killing targets. Following are the various skills that an archer can learn and in which order you should learn them.

Passive Skills (Highest Priority)

  • Bow Mastery (Level 29) -> Increases the Bow Damage by 6% per level of the skill
  • Winged Blessing (Level 9) -> Increases the ranged by 1 per level of the skill

Supportive Skills / Buffs (High Priority)

  • Spark (Level 29) -> This skill does not cost any coins or spirit so can be learnt as soon as it is available.
  • Winged Shell (Level 9) -> Puts a protective aura around you that lasts 20 seconds and absorbs upto a set amount of damage (increases by 75 each level). It is said that, irrespective of level of the skill, the shell absorbs 80% of the damage till it breaks. Also as long as the shell is active, it recovers a fixed amount of MP every 3 seconds for a maximum of 6 times. Also consumes 45 chi.
  • Wings of Grace (Level 59) -> Makes you immune to all effects that reduces movement speed, decreases all damage taken by 30% and increases movement speed by 30% for 15 seconds. Consumes 1 Spark or 100 chi. Since it has only 1 level, its best to get it as soon as it is available.

Attack skills (High Priority)

  • Knockback Arrow (Level 19) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed damage and Knocks back the target by 12 meters. Higher level of skill increases the fixed damage. This is one of the most widely used archer skills. Since higher levels do not increase the knockback distance it is recommended to be left at level 1 in order to conserve mana.
  • Frost Arrow (Level 9) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed damage and reduces the movement speed of the target by 50%. Higher levels of the skill increase the damage and duration of the movement speed debuff. This is the most used archer skills when it comes to grinding apart from knockback arrow. Consumes 25 chi. Pre-requisite Skill: Level 1 Blazing Arrow.
  • Stunning Arrow (Level 39) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed damage and has a % chance of stunning the target for 3 seconds. Higher levels of the skill increase the fixed damage and the % chance. When a target is stunned, it can neither move nor attack. Pre-requisite Skill: Level 1 Aim Low
  • Aim Low (Level 29) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed damage and has a 90% chance to seal the target for a fixed duration. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed damage and duration for which the target is sealed. Consumes 1 spark or 100 chi. Pre-Requisite Skill: Level 1 Knockback Arrow.
  • Sharptooth Arrow (Level 49) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed damage and reduces max hp of all targets within a 6.0 meter radius by fixed %. Higher Levels of the skill increases fixed damage and the max hp reduction %. For bosses this is one of the most important skills and is usually the first skill to be used as it reduces the MAX HP (and indirectly the current hp) of the boss by a fixed percentage which makes killing the boss much faster. Pre-requisite skill: Level 1 Serrated Arrow, Level 1 Vicious Arrow.

Supportive Skills / Buffs (Medium Priority)

  • Blazing Arrow (Level 6) -> Provides a fixed % of weapon attack as fire damage for regular arrows and lasts 10 minutes. This is a useful buff when fighting mobs which are of Metal Element. It is also said to increase weapon damage by 5% always.
  • Wings of Protection (Level 23) -> Increases evasion of all squad members in range by 8% for 30 minutes and movement speed by 15%. Each level increases the evasion % by 3% and duration of the movement speed effect by 60 seconds.

Attack skills (Medium-Low Priority)

  • Barrage of Arrows (Level 59) -> Deals physical damage + Fixed % of weapon attack damage + fixed damage to all targets within a certain radius and consumes a fixed amount of mana every 3 seconds. The skill will stop only when you run out of mana, the target dies or you press ESC. Higher levels of the skill increase the Fixed % of weapon attack damage, fixed damage, damage radius and the amount of mana consumed. Consumes 2 sparks or 200 chi. This is by far the ultimate AoE skill for archers and the most expensive skill around. Highly used in instances when tanks pull a lot of mobs with high HP and Territory Wars. I'd recommend keep the skill at level 6 when you hit 8x since beyond this the mana consumption is hard to handle without a charm / excessive use of mana food/potions. Also I would say, only experience will tell you when exactly to use this skill. Pre-requisite Skill: Level 1 Deadly Shot
  • Deadly Shot (Level 49) -> Deals base physical + Fixed % of weapon attack damage + fixed damage. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed % of weapon attack damage and fixed damage. For all PVE purposes, level 1 of this skill is sufficient only because it is a pre-requisite for learning Barrage of Arrows since it takes a long time to fire (3 seconds). However, should you be more pvp oriented, this skill can be used to snipe targets as it deals a lot of damage compared to Take Aim until endgame levels where you start using higher refined weapons with a much higher attack.
  • Take Aim (Level 1) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed % of weapon attack damage. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed % of weapon attack damage. This is a very unique skill as in you can let it charge for 5 seconds and ensure it does maximum damage or use the skill again to have it fire before completely charging at the cost of inflicting reduced damage. Many archers use it to gain chi.
  • Quickshot (Level 1) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed damage. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed damage. I would not recommend levelling/using this skill.

Skills without close range damage penalty

Elemental Attack Skills

  • Lightning Strike (Level 13) -> Deal metal element damage equal to base physical damage + fixed damage. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed damage.
  • Thundershock (Level 29) -> Deal metal element damage equal to base physical damage + fixed damage and reduces the metal resistance of the target by a fixed %. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed damage and the metal resistance reduction %. Consumes 30 chi. Pre-Requisite Skill: Level 1 Lightning Strike
  • Thunderous Blast (Level 44) -> Deal metal element damage equal to base physical damage + fixed damage to all enemies within a certain radius. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed damage and damage radius.

Physical Attack Skills

  • Winged Pledge (Level 23) -> Deal base physical damage + fixed damage to a nearby target. Higher levels of the skills increases the fixed damage.
  • Wingspan (Level 39) -> Deal base physical damage + fixed damage to all enemies within a 8.0 meter radius and knock them back by particular distance. Higher levels of the skills increases the fixed damage and knockback distance.

Attack skills (Very Low Priority)

  • Vicious Arrow (Level 19) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed amount of wood damage over 15 seconds. Higher levels of skill increase the fixed amount of wood damage over time (DoT). It is recommended to keep this skill at level 1 as DoT skills arent very effective for any situation considering you would inflict more damage using normal shots than what the DoT would inflict in 15 seconds. Also note that the tick in PWI is every 3 seconds, so you have a total of 5 ticks for 15 seconds. Only during these ticks would the target lose hp.
  • Serrated Arrow (Level 34) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed amount of physical damage over 15 seconds. Higher levels of the skill increases the fixed physical damage over time. Again similar to vicious arrow and not learned unless you have a lot to spare to learn this for the sake of completion
  • Stormrage Eagleon (Level 59) -> Deals base physical damage + fixed amount of metal damage over 30 seconds and slows the target by 30%. Higher levels of the skill increase the fixed amount of metal damage. Consumes 2 sparks or 200 chi. Although the damage might seem high, over 30 seconds (10 ticks) this damage inflicted is nothing more of a joke for using 2 sparks. Even without using the spark burst skill, your archer will do more damage using normal shots. However, many archers use this skill to waste sparks and not steal aggro during boss runs. Personally I dont even have level 1 of this skill and not planning to get it in the near future, but I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to learn it.

Special Skills

These skills arent available by default at the skill trainer. In order to learn these, you would first have to make/acquire the skill books. The skill books can be made in the forges in Old Heaven's Tear or City of Thousand Streams and require 20 apocalypse pages and 10 medium ink.

Apocalypse pages can be acquired from mobs in Twilight Temple (or Holy Hall) or bought from other high level players or dungeons 89/99. Medium Ink has to be purchased for 100k each from the merchant in Old Heaven's Tear.

  • Elven Alacrity (Level 79) -> Increases movement speed of the target to the maximum (i.e. 15.0 m/s) and makes it immune to all movement status ailments for 8 seconds. Consumes 1 spark or 100 chi. This is an extremely good skill which can help you get out of sticky situations or help a team mate (most likely cleric) escape from a bad situation and the revive the others once safe.
  • Blessing of the Condor (Level 79) -> Increases your archer's evasion by 1000% for 6 seconds. This is more for pvp oriented archers who can use this skill to escape fatal hits from the melee classes (i.e. Barb or Blademaster). Other high dex classes (Archers and Assassins) and magic classes (Wizard, Cleric, Venomancer, Psychic) will still be able to hit you.

Equipment

Weapons

Archers can use swords, axes, ranged weapons, claws, fists provided we meet the stat requirement, but most of our skills are limited to use with ranged weapons. Following are the 3 ranged classes of weapons available at our disposal:-

  • Bow -> These weapons have average attack speed and medium high and low end attack values. This means there wont be much difference in the damage you deal and you would deal at a fairly good rate. The ammo they use are arrows
  • Crossbow (or Xbow for short) -> These are best suited for PVP since they have good spike damages. Having the maximum high end attack and least low end attack XBow's damage varies a lot with each shot making it unpredictable. Also they are the slowest of all the ranged weapons making them a little challenging to use for normal PVE grinding. However, certain exceptions do exist since for certain level ranges, XBows are the best due to lack of a better bow/slingshot. The ammor used by XBows are bolts
  • Slingshot -> These are fastest of all the ranged weapons and have the least variation in damage dealt making them the best to use for grinding mobs. The ammo they use are shots.

Weapon Progression

Level 1~20 -> Use the NPC weapons for that particular level. You would also get weapons from your supply chest which are pretty good. These levels go by real fast so you dont need to worry too much about them

Level 20/22~42 -> Use the trial xbow. Although its a Xbow, its probably the cheapest alternative for that level range. Also if you were lucky enough to get the Moonlight Bow, it would be the best. However should you fail to acquire the moonlight bow, use the trial xbow till you find a better bow/slingshot for the level range.

Level 42/45~50 -> I would recommend the sinister shooter slingshot. These are usually cheap enough for you to acquire. However should you be unable to acquire this, use a npc bow/slingshot till you get the bow of goddess from a quest. This bow would serve you well till atleast 50.

Level 50/53~60 -> Here you have 2 options if you dont have the sinister shooter slingshot. You can either spend 5 gold to acquire a perfect hammer, open your lvl50 supply chest and use the General Summer's Longbow which is an extremely good bow OR acquire the penetrator bow which is a legendary bow usable from level 53. If neither of these are affordable options for you, try finding a good bow/slingshot from the auction house. Youre basically looking for something that would deal as much damage as possible.

Level 60/61~69 -> Once you hit 60, you can start accessing Twilight Temple Weapons. The swiftwind xbow is probably the best and cheapest weapon for this level range. The other weapon available to you is the Solar Slayer which is a legendary bow.

Level 69/70~80 -> The best option here is to use the Wind and Clouds legendary slingshot. No other weapon in this particular level range even compares in damage output to this slingshot since it has a -interval mod of 0.1 making the already fast slingshot even faster. A well refined wind and clouds can be used even till level 85 should you not have enough money. On top of all this, the weapon as such is extremely cheap (< 100k).

The other options for this level range are:-

  • Unicorn -> This is a TT70 Bow which many archers prefer for aesthetic reasons since they dont like the looks of slingshots
  • Thundercrack -> This is a TT70 xBow which deals a good deal of damage. However, in terms of speed it pales in comparison to the wind and coulds.

Level 80+ -> By this time, you would already have a fair idea on what sort of weapons you prefer so I will simply mention some of the good weapons available to you:-

Level 80+ Ranged Weapons

  • Crimson Horn: Soulsmasher -> Usable at lvl80. TT80 Gold Bow which would be bound to your character upon equipping. Bound weapons cannot be resold. The good thing about this bow is that it has a -interval mod of 0.05 making it faster and also a 5% of increasing the weapon attack by 100% at the cost of 5% mana which would give higher damage. However this bow is not recommended considering you have better options at level 85 since theyre not bound to your character and have a higher damage output.
  • Chained Jail -> This is a nice xBow should you not enough money for the soulsmasher or the level 85 options. This xbow is unique since it has a 5% chance to stun the enemy
  • Flashfire -> A pure damage xBow since it provides additional crit %. Also many archers would try acquiring this in order to progress to the level 90 xbow Blinding Radiance.

Level 85+ Ranged Weapons

  • Vast Land -> This is the frostcovered green bow which is not very expensive and is only slightly less in damage output to the soulsmasher. However this weapon is not bound to your character so any investments made can be recovered.
  • Broad Land -> Used to be extremely rare/impossible to obtain but with all the packs PW has introduced, acquiring this weapon has become more feasible. Also it has a 5% chance to increase damage at the cost of physical defense which is a double edged sword depending on the situation. It is fairly expensive but a fairly refined one is better than the TT90 Xbow Blinding Radiance since the Broad Land is of a higher grade. Most of the archers these days aim to acquire this when they 85 and use it till 95.
  • Windcatcher -> This is a fairly decent xbow but pales in comparison to any of the previously mentioned weapons since it only provides additonal range. Usable at level 87 and pretty cheap but would not recommend it.

Level 90+ Ranged Weapons

  • Blinding Radiance -> This is the most popular level 90 xbow due to its boost to physical attack, crit % and additional 15 DEX. Also its fairly cheap compared to the broad land. This is ideal for people who cant put in a lot of money into acquiring boutique stuff.
  • Heaven Shatterer -> The dream of every archer out there and the final goal for most. This is because this badass level 95 bow has an -interval mod of 0.1 and has a 5% chance of removing all positive buffs from the target. Extremely expensive but probably the lowest level bow which can be recasted into a Nirvana bow which is of a higher grade thereby providing more attack on refining.
